Short answer: The tingle from beta-alanine (paraesthesia) is a harmless side effect of a spike in blood levels. It has nothing to do with whether beta-alanine is working. Beta-alanine works by building up carnosine in your muscles over weeks of daily use: 4–6g a day for at least 2–4 weeks in the research. You can get the full benefit with no tingles, or get tingles from a dose too small to do anything.
What beta-alanine actually does
Beta-alanine is the limiting building block for carnosine, a compound stored in muscle that buffers acid build-up during hard exercise. More carnosine means you can hold high intensity a little longer before fatigue shuts the set down.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand concludes:
- 4–6g per day for 4 weeks significantly increases muscle carnosine
- Benefits show up most in hard efforts lasting roughly 1–4 minutes
- The only reported side effect is tingling, which can be reduced with smaller split doses (about 1.6g) or sustained-release forms
Notice what's missing: anything about feeling it on the day.
Why it tingles
A single larger dose of beta-alanine spikes blood levels and activates specific nerve receptors in the skin, usually around the face, neck, ears and hands. It peaks shortly after you take it and fades within about an hour.
That sensation is about how fast blood levels rise, not how much carnosine is building in your muscles. Two consequences:
- Splitting the dose or taking it with food reduces tingles without reducing the benefit.
- People build tolerance. Plenty of regular users stop noticing it entirely, while their carnosine levels keep rising.
Why brands love the tingle
Because it's something you can feel, 10 minutes after drinking it. That makes a pre-workout feel like it's "kicking in", even when the beta-alanine dose is far too small to load your muscles and you only take it 3 times a week.
It's a sensory cue, not a performance metric. A tingle from 1.6g taken twice a week is pure theatre.
The dose that actually matters: total intake
Beta-alanine works like creatine: it's about saturation over time, not a single hit. A meta-analysis found benefits after a median total intake of about 179g (Hobson et al., 2012). That's how much you've taken overall, not per serving.

The catch with beta-alanine in pre-workouts: you only take pre-workout on training days. If that's 4 days a week, your weekly intake drops by around 40%. Consistency beats intensity here.
How we use beta-alanine
NEUPHORIC has no beta-alanine. That's deliberate. It's built as a daily driver to feel smooth and controlled, and we didn't want an ingredient that only works with daily loading in a product people use on training days. If you were expecting tingles from NEUPHORIC, that's why you aren't getting them.
VASO-DIAL contains 3,500mg per serving. With no caffeine, there's room for something to produce a stimulating feeling, in this case with the tingling. We still advise supplementing with it separately, daily though.
How to reduce the tingles (if you don't like them)
- Take it with food.
- Sip your pre-workout over 10–15 minutes rather than downing it.
- Split the dose: half a serving earlier in the day, half before training.
- Stick with it. Most people notice it less after a few weeks.
Tingles are harmless. If you get other symptoms like a rash, swelling or breathing difficulty, stop and seek medical advice.
FAQ
Does beta-alanine work if I don't feel tingles? Yes. The tingle is a side effect of blood levels spiking. The benefit comes from muscle carnosine building up over weeks of daily intake.
How long does beta-alanine take to work? Research shows benefits after at least 2–4 weeks of 4–6g daily, with carnosine continuing to rise beyond that.
Are beta-alanine tingles dangerous? The ISSN position stand describes tingling as the only reported side effect and considers beta-alanine safe for healthy adults at recommended doses.
Should I take beta-alanine on rest days? Yes. It works through accumulation, so missing rest days slows the build-up.
Why doesn't NEUPHORIC contain beta-alanine? It's designed as a smooth daily driver. Beta-alanine needs daily loading to do anything, and its tingle doesn't fit that experience.
